Senior Independent Advisory

Independent Advisory at the Nexus of Energy and Industrial Decarbonisation

Hydrogen, Carbon & Low-Carbon Industrial Systems

What We Do

We are a systems integration and project structuring advisory, integrating engineering, commercial and investment perspectives in low carbon and decarbonization projects.

We support industrials, infrastructure developers and investors in shaping projects from early-stage concept through to bankable definition — integrating technical architecture, phased project development, and commercial structuring.

Working either embedded within a PMO or as an independent external advisor, DecarboNexus helps turn concepts into credible, investable projects.

Wietse ter Veld

Founder & Principal Consultant, DecarboNexus

Mechanical engineer and energy transition advisor with over 30 years of international experience across oil & gas, renewables, hydrogen, CCUS, and infrastructure. Since 2017, specialised in green hydrogen, ammonia, and Power-to-X — supporting developers, governments, and financiers from strategy through to project definition.

Previously: Strategic and technical advisor to AtkinsRéalis (energy transition & hydrogen); 25+ years with Schlumberger across major energy projects (upstream & infrastructure).

Wietse operates at the interface of strategy, engineering, and project development — translating technical complexity into investment-grade clarity.

APPROACH

Decarbonisation is not a single-technology problem.
It is a system challenge.

We work at the intersection of engineering, economics, and delivery — ensuring that projects are not only technically sound, but also commercially defensible and scalable in real-world conditions.

Our approach is grounded in:

Concept Examples

Concept Examples in Industrial Decarbonisation

Examples of integrated energy and decarbonisation systems, demonstrating how complex projects are structured from concept to investable solutions.

    • Hydrogen production via electrolysis integrated with industrial processes, utilising oxygen as a valuable co-product
    • Oxygen valorisation in combustion or process optimisation
    • Improved economics through coupling electrolyser systems with industrial host processes
    • Integration with carbon capture systems for further decarbonisation

Focus: turning electrolyser oxygen from a waste stream into a system value driver

    • Capture and utilisation of biogenic CO₂ streams from fermentation, biomass processing, waste-to-energy, or pyrolysis
    • Biogenic CO₂ combined with green hydrogen to produce synthetic fuels — e-methanol, ammonia, or SAF
    • Alignment with low-carbon fuel standards and carbon credit frameworks

Focus: circular carbon and high-value fuel production

    • Design of systems combining renewables, storage, and hydrogen to meet industrial energy demand
    • Solar and wind integration with electrolysis and industrial processes
    • Energy storage optimisation — battery, hydrogen, and thermal storage options
    • Reliable and consistent energy supply as a key design constraint

Focus: structuring renewable energy systems that meet industrial process requirements

    • System-level optimisation of CO₂ capture, handling, and reuse across industrial processes
    • Integration of CCS/CCU with hydrogen production and synthetic fuel pathways
    • Matching CO₂ streams with hydrogen availability and utilisation options
    • Optimising capture cost versus utilisation value — including carbon credit and compliance frameworks
    • Project structuring with awareness of CBAM exposure, RFNBO certification, and CfD revenue mechanisms

Focus: moving from CO₂ as waste CO₂ as feedstock
